The variety of locations, the hours of sunshine, local talent, and the connectivity of Gran Canaria convince international producers
2024-10-03
“Gran Canaria Swim Week is much more than a runway; it is a magnificent showcase for our island and all the talent we have. For this reason, it is the perfect stage to organize this reverse mission with audiovisual production companies from around the world. We aim to highlight the island as an attractive and competitive location for audiovisual productions, leveraging its diverse landscapes, privileged climate, and local talent.” This was the reflection shared by Minerva Alonso, Councilor for Economic Development, Industry, Trade, and Crafts of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, at the beginning of a meeting with six national and international production companies and creative agencies specialized in the audiovisual advertising sector, particularly focused on fashion.
This initiative is organized within the framework of Swim Week 2024, in collaboration with the Gran Canaria Economic Promotion Society (SPEGC) and the Gran Canaria Chamber of Commerce, with the purpose of promoting the island as a cutting-edge destination for the audiovisual industry.
“We are launching an innovative virtual studio with LED screens; it is the next step beyond chroma key and will undoubtedly be an additional attraction for this type of advertising production, particularly for fashion and automotive advertising. Attracted by this tool, they will be able to discover outdoor locations, our industry, and our talent,” explained Nuria Guinnot, coordinator of the Gran Canaria Film Commission.
Antonio Otero, CMO of VCCP, noted that “we have been surprised by the professionalism with which we have been treated, and the most notable advantages for us are the physical attributes of the island, institutional support, and tax incentives.” Óscar Cabanas, executive producer of the agency We Are Beauty, expressed similar sentiments, stating, “one of the important reasons for this trip is to get to know the local talent and what technical aspects they can offer me.”
In the past decade, Gran Canaria has established itself as a competitive destination for hosting all types of audiovisual productions. The island accommodates an average of over 100 productions a year, including commercials, campaigns, and photo shoots. Thanks to this growing interest and demand, audiovisual production companies in Gran Canaria have gained significant experience handling the most demanding productions.
The main advantages the island offers, which these six production companies have been able to witness firsthand, include the variety of locations within short distances of each other, excellent year-round weather (over 4,800 hours of sunlight), connectivity with major European cities, a wide range of accommodations and film-friendly hotels, a local industry with a strong professional background, and qualified creative and technical talent with experience.
The production companies participating in this reverse mission included: The Crew, We Are Beauty, Marco Aurelio Mendia, YTP CREW, The Gang, and VCCP. Local representatives included Shoot Canarias, Pop House, Mas que Moda, Magnetic Films, Macaronesia Films, Lucky Islands, Islas Producciones, and 7 Islands Film.
